Fall Day Trips to Assateague and Berlin, MD
Fall Day Trips from Ocean City, MD: Assateague Island and Berlin
The Ocean City boardwalk is the main event, but some of the best parts of an Ocean City trip are just a short drive away. Fall is the perfect time to explore them. The summer traffic is gone, the air is cooler, and you can take your time.
Two of our favorite day trips sit just minutes from the Grand Hotel: Assateague Island, home of the famous wild horses, and the small town of Berlin, Maryland. Do one in the morning and the other in the afternoon, and you’ll still be back on the boardwalk in time for dinner.
Assateague Island: Wild Horses and Quiet Beaches
Just south of Ocean City, across the Route 611 bridge, Assateague Island feels like a different world. There are no high-rises or boardwalks here, just miles of open beach, salt marsh and
maritime forest. And of course, the wild horses.
The Maryland side of the island is home to a free-roaming herd managed by the National Park Service. You’ll often spot them grazing along the roadside, wandering the dunes or even strolling down the beach. It’s one of the few places on the East Coast where you can see wild horses up close in their natural habitat.
Why Fall Is a Great Time to Go
Summer brings crowds and biting bugs to Assateague. By October, both have mostly cleared out. The weather is comfortable for walking, the light is beautiful for photos, and you’ll often have long stretches of beach to yourself. Fall is also a great season for birdwatching as migrating birds pass through the marshes.
Things to Do on Assateague
- Look for the horses: Drive slowly through the park and keep your eyes on the marsh and dunes.
- Walk the nature trails: Short, easy trails wind through the marsh, forest, and dunes, with boardwalks over the wetter areas.
- Spend time on the beach: Even in October, a walk along the water’s edge is hard to beat.
- Go crabbing or clamming: In the bay, or rent a kayak to explore the marsh from the water.
- Stop at the visitor center: on the mainland side of the bridge to learn about the island and its horses before you head over.
If you’re in town on Saturday, Oct 17, the Coastal Walk & 5K at Assateague State Park is a fun way to see the island on foot.
Berlin, Maryland: Small-Town Charm Down the Road
About 15 minutes west of the boardwalk, Berlin is the kind of town that makes you slow down. Its historic Main Street is lined with Victorian buildings, local boutiques, antique shops, galleries,
and cafes, all within a few easy blocks. Budget Travel once named it “America’s Coolest Small Town,” and one afternoon there will show you why.
Movie fans may recognize a few spots, too. Parts of Runaway Bride and Tuck Everlasting were filmed right on Berlin’s streets.
Things to Do in Berlin
- Shop Main Street: Browse local boutiques, antiques, art, and gift shops. It’s a great place to get a head start on holiday shopping.
- See the Atlantic Hotel: This historic hotel in the center of town dates to the 1890s and is a local landmark.
- Visit the Calvin B. Taylor House Museum: Learn about the town’s history and see period furniture and local artifacts.
- Grab lunch or coffee: Visit one of the many locally owned spots downtown, then take your time wandering.
Berlin Oktoberfest: Saturday, Oct 17
If you can plan your trip around one Berlin visit this fall, make it Oct 17. Berlin Oktoberfest and Sidewalk Sale fill downtown with German food, drinks, music, and sidewalk deals from local shops. Pair it with a morning on Assateague, and you’ve got a full fall day.
How to Plan Your Day Trip from the Grand Hotel
Both spots are an easy drive from our home base on the boardwalk at 21st Street, so you can see them in a single day without rushing. Here’s one way to do it:
- Morning on Assateague: Head out early, when the horses tend to be active and the beach is quiet. Bring water, sunscreen, and bug spray just in case.
- Lunch in Berlin: Drive west into town and grab a bite downtown.
- Afternoon on Main Street: Shop, browse the museum, and soak in the small-town feel.
- Evening back in Ocean City: Catch the sunset, take a walk on the boardwalk, and settle into your room for the night.
